Gemotions

The world seemed to tilt on its axis when the jackhammer erupted. Sarah nearly dropped the groceries. She clutched the bag, knuckles white, as the vibrations rattled her teeth. The noise! It was deafening. Looking across the narrow space between her house and the Millers', she saw the familiar brick facade was now a mangled mess.

"What in the world…?" she mumbled, her eyes widening. The realization sunk in slowly. The Millers were finally starting their long-promised kitchen remodel. Sarah felt a peculiar fluttering in her stomach, a sensation she couldn't quite place. She imagined her tranquil mornings, once filled only with birdsong, would now be punctuated by the relentless clangor of construction.
