He moved forward slowly, a strange feeling creeping up his spine. Michael recognized it immediately, the gold band with the small pearl – his grandfather's ring – sat against the faded velvet. He froze.

The air seemed to thicken, making it difficult to breathe. He wanted to run, to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the shop. His legs felt like lead weights. The world blurred around the edges.

He took a shaky breath. He had to have it. He had to. "How much for that ring?" he asked, his voice strained. The shopkeeper, a burly man with a bored expression, looked up.
