The overhead light flickered, casting long shadows across the pawn shop floor. Sarah’s vision swam. There, under the cold, harsh glare, sat the cameo ring. The one her grandmother, Evelyn, had always worn.

Her jaw clenched. She felt a strange tingling sensation in her limbs, as if they were falling asleep. She couldn't believe it. She felt a growing sense of disbelief.

She swallowed hard. The shop owner, a woman with dyed red hair, watched her, expressionless. "Can I help you?" she asked. Sarah stammered, pointing at the ring. The blood pounded in her ears. She felt a rising panic.
