The stale scent of cigarettes and old metal filled the air. John's chest felt constricted. The ring. His grandmother's wedding ring, a simple gold band – it was there, in the window.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable heat flush his cheeks. He wanted to shout, to cry. He was overwhelmed by a tidal wave of memories. He didn’t know how it ended up here, but it didn't matter. He had to get it back.

He forced himself to walk towards the counter. He felt an unusual heaviness in his legs. "How much?" he asked, his voice rough. The shopkeeper, an elderly man, peered at him over his spectacles.
