“Congratulations, you two!” Ben said loudly, forcing a smile onto his face as he shook hands with the groom. As he turned, he locked eyes with someone he hadn’t expected to see: Jessica. She was standing with a date, smiling. He felt the blood rush to his head.

His palms began to sweat. He quickly excused himself, mumbling something about needing a drink, but found his feet moving in the opposite direction. He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest.

The noise of the party suddenly felt overwhelming. The festive decorations, the celebratory atmosphere, all mocked the sudden turmoil he felt inside. He retreated towards the nearest door, desperate for air.
