"And now, for the first dance!" the DJ announced. Eleanor felt her stomach clench as the music started. She looked up and across the room. There he was, leaning against a pillar, watching the happy couple. It was David, the one she'd dated a year ago, before he moved to another state.

Her vision swam, momentarily blurring the room into shades of color. She felt a wave of nausea sweep over her. The happy smiles of the dancers became a blur. She looked down at her feet, and fought the urge to run.

She fumbled with her phone, pretending to check a message, the screen reflecting her pale and drawn face. She just wanted to disappear, melt into the background.
