"It was so clear," Daniel said, pointing a finger at the wall. "She was the one who saw the thief, remember? You said it was her." They were discussing the time Daniel's car had been broken into. They'd both been there.

His friend, Mark, looked utterly confused. “No way. I’m positive it was him. Remember the hoodie? It wasn't her, it was him!” Mark’s certainty was unsettling. Daniel's gut churned. He recalled the dim streetlights, the shadowy figure darting away. He was almost certain he saw a flash of brown hair, not a shaved head. He felt as if he was being gaslit. He sat back, his head throbbing. He felt a deep-seated panic, a sense of disquiet, like he was standing on shifting sand.
