He felt a sudden, dizzying sense of freefall. The doctor’s voice faded in and out as he listened to the explanation. The news hit him like a physical blow, stealing his breath and clouding his vision. He had been so sure.

He felt a deep, hollow ache in his chest. All the preparations, the acceptance of impending doom, had been for nothing. He wanted to shout, to rage at the injustice of it all, but his throat was constricted.

He looked down at his hands, seeing them tremble uncontrollably. He felt a profound sense of disorientation, as if the ground beneath him had dissolved. “But… what about the tests?” he finally managed to ask, his voice thin and shaky.
