The elevator doors opened onto the office floor, and Michael found himself moving through the space in a daze. He'd just finished a performance review with his manager. The review had been positive. But as soon as he had gotten back to his desk, he saw the new salaries. A sudden wave of heat washed over him. He felt faint. He quickly sat down to stop himself from collapsing.

He had spent years climbing the ladder, giving his all to this company. And now, a recent graduate with little relevant experience was earning more. He leaned back in his chair, trying to steady his breathing.

He didn't speak to anyone for the rest of the day.
