"Excuse me," she said, her voice sounding thin and reedy. She was talking to her manager, but barely comprehending what he was saying. The email with the salary information was still fresh in her mind, like a brand. Her palms were sweating. She felt a sudden need for fresh air.

She excused herself and went to the restroom. She stared at herself in the mirror, her face pale. She splashed cold water on her face, but it didn't help. The water ran down her cheeks, feeling like tears.

She had to get out of the building. She needed to breathe.
