The cafe suddenly felt too small, the aroma of roasted coffee now cloying. Amelia gripped her ceramic mug, knuckles white. Across the tiny table, David, the man she'd thought was hers, was exchanging a nervous glance with the woman who'd just approached them. The woman, Sarah, held a bouquet of sunflowers, the very same ones David had given Amelia last week. His face went pale, a bead of sweat tracing a path down his temple. "Uh… Amelia, Sarah," he stammered, his voice cracking. Amelia’s jaw tightened. She found herself unable to speak. The air seemed to have thickened, making it difficult to breathe.
