He stood in the doorway, staring at the familiar facade of the house, and a strange numbness consumed him. He'd imagined this moment, of course, but not like this, not *this*. The lawyer’s announcement had been like a punch to the stomach. His sister, Sarah, had started weeping silently, shoulders shaking.

He ran a hand over his face, trying to clear the fog in his mind. The place looked bigger, older, more… imposing than he remembered. It felt as if he was watching a play, and he didn’t understand the script.

He swallowed hard, the taste of ash lingering on his tongue. What were they supposed to do now?
