The blood drained from her face. She felt a profound sense of disorientation, a disconnect from her own body. The sight of her roommate, Chloe, idly flipping through the pages of her journal was like a physical blow. The soft patter of rain outside seemed to amplify the silence in the room, making the intrusion even more pronounced.

She wanted to run, to disappear, to erase the moment from existence. She managed a weak, "What are you doing?" Her voice was barely a whisper, a thread of sound swallowed by the oppressive quiet.

Chloe, meeting her gaze, simply shrugged. "Just curious." Her tone was dismissive, as if she were inspecting a discarded piece of trash. The casual insouciance of the response felt like a personal affront, a violation of the trust they had (or had had) fostered.
