A chill ran down his spine. He felt a deep, instinctive unease, a primal warning signal firing in his brain. Seeing his journal in David's hands was like being punched in the gut. He stood frozen by the doorway, his muscles locked, his world suddenly off-kilter.

His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic rhythm accompanying the mounting feeling. He wanted to scream, but the words were trapped, lost somewhere in the turmoil that had overtaken him. Instead, he just stared, the world around him blurring at the edges.

David, seemingly oblivious to the gravity of the moment, looked up. "Hey, man. Found this lying around. Figured it was yours." He offered the journal with a careless gesture. The audacity of the gesture made him want to rip it from his grasp.
