He slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. The screen displayed the words: "Likely no relation to biological parents." Daniel paced the small living room, his hands trembling. The world felt suddenly unstable, the familiar contours of his life blurring. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. The framed photographs on the wall, filled with smiling faces of the people he had always called family, seemed to mock him with their false serenity. He needed air. He grabbed his keys and stumbled toward the door, not sure where he was going, only that he needed to escape the suffocating confines of his reality.
