The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, unread for nearly a week. She’d been putting off the DNA results. Curiosity had initially propelled her to spit in the vial, but a deep unease had taken root since. Now, the subject line, "Your DNA Results Are Ready," throbbed against the screen. She took a shaky breath and clicked. Her vision swam. The first line stated, “We found no genetic links to the family you’ve known your entire life.” Her fingers tightened on the mouse. A coldness spread from her chest, making her shiver despite the warm afternoon sun slanting through the window. She scrolled further, heart hammering against her ribs.
