A wave of heat washed over him, a burning sensation that started in his chest and spread to his extremities. The family crest, the intricately carved wooden box passed down through generations, was to be sold. His father, the man who’d told him stories of its heritage, who'd entrusted him with its safekeeping for a time, was the one who uttered those words.

His ears rang with an unfamiliar sound, a high-pitched whine that seemed to intensify with each passing moment. He felt disconnected from his body, as if witnessing the scene from a distance. The world blurred around him.

He had no words. He simply turned and stumbled out of the room, needing air, needing to get away.
