He felt his stomach twist into knots. The old train set, the one his father had built with him, the one that had held a special place in his heart, was being sent to a stranger. It was not a matter of choice, his mother said.

He felt the corners of his mouth twitch. His eyes burned with unshed tears. The familiar objects around him seemed to morph into mocking shadows.

He struggled to take a breath, but his lungs felt constricted. He stood there, frozen, the weight of the announcement pressing down upon him.
