Her breath hitched. She felt a powerful disquiet. The painting, her great-aunt’s, the one that hung in the hallway, the one with the swirling blues and greens that she loved to stare at, was to be given to someone else.

She felt a strange disconnect, like a vital part of her had been severed. Her mouth went dry. Her hands felt clumsy, useless.

The words of the other person in the room were a blur. All she could focus on was the empty space on the wall where the painting now would not be.
