The declaration – "I'm thinking about a goldfish" - hit David like a physical blow. His jaw dropped. He blinked rapidly, as if attempting to clear a sudden fog from his vision. He stood rooted to the spot, his entire body frozen in place. He felt a strange tingling sensation spread through his limbs, as if he'd been electrified.

The air seemed to crackle with an unspoken tension, an invisible force field separating him from his roommate, Mark. The brightly lit living room seemed to darken, the familiar furniture taking on a sinister aura. His heart pounded in his chest, a frantic drumbeat against his ribs.
