The email sat, a cold, digital serpent, coiled at the bottom of her inbox. Sarah had been refreshing, obsessively, for three days. Now, the subject line, "Regarding Your Manuscript Submission," felt like a physical blow. Her hand trembled as she clicked.

The rejection was polite, even complimentary, but the words blurred before her eyes. She felt a sudden, intense heat bloom in her chest, followed by a dizzying lightheadedness.
