He’d imagined this moment a thousand times, each fantasy a perfect symphony of acceptance. Now, the reality was a discordant cacophony. He stared at the email, the stark black text a judgment on his life's work. His coffee, forgotten, grew cold in its mug.

A coldness crept through him, starting at his fingertips and spreading inwards. He stood abruptly, the chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor. He paced the small apartment, his normally steady gait jerky and erratic. His jaw clenched, muscles taut.

“Impossible,” he muttered, his voice a strained croak. He felt a desperate urge to tear the email apart, to obliterate the words that had just demolished his aspirations.
