The photograph slipped from Emily's grasp, fluttering to the floor. She stared at it, the image swimming before her eyes. The woman in the picture was her aunt, the gentle, kind woman who’d always been there for her. But in this photograph, taken decades earlier, her aunt was leading a protest, shouting into a megaphone, with a burning building in the background.

She remembered her aunt’s quiet demeanor, her soft voice. This vibrant, angry woman seemed a stranger.

Emily let out a shaky breath, running a hand through her hair. Her grandmother always said her aunt was a homebody, quiet and content. The family history she thought she knew was crumbling before her.
