The abrupt stop sent a jolt of alarm through Karen. She blinked, the sudden darkness making her head spin. She reached out to touch the cold metal of the elevator wall, as if to ground herself. Next to her, Bob was nervously tapping his foot.

She felt a deep disquiet spreading through her. A feeling of unreality flooded her senses. The world seemed to tilt. She felt utterly isolated, trapped in this metal box.

She felt her stomach churn. Her hands were clammy. She found herself staring at the floor, willing the world to make sense. She needed air, to escape. She found herself whispering a desperate prayer.
