The news arrived in a team meeting. "We're thrilled to announce that Emily will be taking over as Senior Project Manager!" The manager beamed, looking at the chosen employee. David, sitting beside her, felt a jolt of… emptiness. His face turned a shade paler.

He felt a sudden chill, despite the warm office air. His fingers tightened into fists, the nails digging into his palms. He leaned back in his chair, trying to appear nonchalant, but his chest felt constricted.

He looked around the room, trying to read the faces of his colleagues. Their smiles and nods of congratulations felt like a cruel joke. He wanted to run, to escape the suffocating atmosphere.
