The email notification popped up on his phone: "Promotion Announcement." He’d waited for this, planned for this. He took a deep breath and clicked. The words hit him like a physical blow. "Congratulations to … Sarah." His world turned grey.

His vision swam. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear his head, but the name still glared at him. A bitter taste filled his mouth. He found himself gripping his phone with such force, his knuckles turned white.

He rose from his chair, a sudden burst of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He didn't know where he was going, but he needed to move, to escape the confines of his office. He needed air.
