It was the company-wide announcement. “We are pleased to announce… Mark Miller has been promoted…” The words blurred, the rest of the sentence fading into oblivion. Sarah slumped in her chair, the blood draining from her face.

Her meticulously crafted presentation, the late nights, the strategic networking - all for naught. The room seemed to grow smaller, the walls closing in. She took a slow, deliberate breath, trying to calm the frantic pounding in her chest.

She stood up slowly, her legs feeling shaky, and started walking without thinking. She needed to be alone, to process the information, to figure out what went wrong. The hallway stretched before her, an endless expanse of muted colors.
