Gemotions

The shovel slipped from David's grasp, clattering against the exposed metal of the container. He stared at it, the sweat on his brow suddenly cold. He knew the location of the time capsule, as the map in his pocket testified, but he had no memory of planning it, digging it, or selecting its contents.

He bent to pick up the shovel, his movements slow and deliberate. Reaching down, he opened the box. Inside was a collection of his favorite sports cards. He used to be very proud of these. Now, though, the joy felt missing. He knew the cards were valuable, but he felt nothing for them.

He swallowed hard, a strange pressure building behind his eyes. He scanned the scene, the familiar landscape suddenly taking on a distorted, unreal quality. His hands began to shake uncontrollably. He backed away from the time capsule, bumping into a tree.
