The elevator doors opened, and David walked out, clutching the dreaded letter. His apartment, once a haven of peace and solitude, now felt like a battleground. He fumbled with his keys, his hands shaking. He unlocked the door, stepped inside, and dropped the letter onto the counter, where it landed with a soft thud.

He moved to the fridge and pulled out a beer, the cold bottle stinging his palm. He popped the top, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet. He took a long swig, letting the liquid slide down his throat, but it did nothing to soothe the tightness in his chest. His usual ease in his apartment was gone.

He sat on the couch, staring blankly at the television. He’d envisioned himself living here forever. Now, the future felt hazy, uncertain. The walls seemed to be closing in, the air thick and difficult to breathe. He wanted to scream.
