From his porch, Arthur observed the commotion across the street with a pursed lip. The Bennetts were finally “re-doing the roof.” He knew what that meant: weeks of disruption, mountains of debris, and the constant, grating sound of hammering.

He tapped his cane on the porch step, a slow, deliberate rhythm mirroring his thoughts. They had been talking about this for months, of course, their enthusiasm palpable. He’d seen plenty of these projects come and go, with the inevitable delays and unexpected expenses.

He shook his head and went back inside, muttering about the “good old days” when things were simpler. He had a feeling this "roof redo" would be anything but simple.
