"Perfect opportunity," my friend Maria had declared, over a shared pizza. "We're going to nail this!" The "this" was the editorial assistant position at "Word Weaver Publishing." I remained on the fence. I said I was excited, but inside I was braced for impact.

The email landed with a thud. Interview invitations. I clicked the link, reading it slowly, trying to find a catch. It all seemed so… convenient. I texted Maria.

Later, as Maria was happily chatting about potential interview answers, I kept quiet. My gut, as usual, gave me cause for pause.
