"Unbelievable," Elena said, her voice strained. She stared at the email, the words swimming before her eyes. It said she had a half-sibling. A sister. How was this possible?

She’d always been an only child. Her parents were always around. They were a team. She'd known every detail of her childhood. The idea that someone else might have shared that world, that history… it was an impossibility.

She went to her bedroom, walking as though she was in a dream. She lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling, trying to breathe, trying to make sense of the new reality. She picked up a picture of her parents, holding it close to her chest, as if she could get answers from them.
