The test results were on his phone. John looked at them, then locked the screen. He wasn't sure how to feel. He felt a coldness creep into his heart. His whole life had been spent believing something that may not be true.

He stood in his living room, staring at the pictures on the wall. He recognized the faces, his parents, his childhood. Now, they felt like strangers, the memories tainted. He ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't known he possessed.

He walked to the window, watching the world outside. The world seemed different, the colors muted. He took a deep breath, and the air filled his lungs, but didn't seem to help. He felt a sense of dread that he could not shake.
