The demolition crew arrived with a cacophony of noise. Machines rumbled, metal shrieked. From across the street, Sarah watched, clutching her coat tighter. She tried to appear calm, but a tremor was running through her. She was so angry at the world. She wanted to scream.

She’d spent her entire childhood in that house. She knew every nook and cranny, every creak in the floorboards. She had countless memories in that place. Now, it was going to be flattened. All of it. Erased.

She bit down on her lip, a familiar habit when she was anxious. It didn’t make the feeling go away, the feeling of something being stolen, of being left empty. She looked at her older brother, who stood next to her. He seemed completely unaffected. She shook her head. He was so cold.
