"Sold?" Sarah muttered under her breath, the word tasting bitter on her tongue. Her coffee cup wobbled precariously in her hand, threatening to spill. She set it down with exaggerated care. The announcement had just dropped, and already the office was buzzing with whispers.

She leaned back in her chair, arms folded across her chest. The bright, airy office suddenly felt claustrophobic. She knew the deal with these things. Promises were plentiful and often hollow.

She had survived two previous acquisitions, and each time she had seen colleagues lose their jobs. This time, however, felt different. Or perhaps, she was simply tired of the pretense.
