The air in David’s cubicle seemed to grow heavy. He slowly lowered the document, the glossy paper feeling slick in his hand. “Enhanced shareholder value,” the email had declared. Right. That usually meant “less employee value.”

He looked around at the familiar faces, all now staring at their screens. He caught a flicker of recognition in a colleague's eyes. Then a shrug. They both knew the drill.

He rubbed his eyes, feeling the familiar ache of a long day. He knew this company inside and out. The new owners, whoever they were, likely didn't have a clue. He doubted any of the promises would be kept.
