He fiddled with the stapler on his desk, avoiding eye contact with the man across from him, John. Their paths colliding at the office felt strange enough, but to discover a shared childhood experience seemed far-fetched.

John was describing the legendary talent show, mentioning details that didn't feel true to David. He felt a nagging sensation, like a puzzle piece that didn't fit. He just kept thinking how could someone be so happy about camp.

“You’re pulling my leg, right?” David finally asked, his voice flat. He felt a need to see what would happen with the conversation. He was also curious about why this was happening.
