Gemotions

The envelope, cream-coloured and expensive-looking, had landed with a thud on the worn doormat. She approached it cautiously, as if it might bite. Eviction. She had expected something like this. But not *this*. Not yet.

She carefully, meticulously, unfolded the letter, her fingers tracing the embossed crest at the top. This was a slick operation. She examined every sentence, every comma, searching for an error, a loophole. Finding none, she scoffed.

She knew she hadn’t done anything wrong. She had always been a good tenant. A feeling of simmering fury started to bubble inside her. Someone was trying to scare her, to exploit her. She’d see about that.
