He held the notice at arm's length, as if it were contaminated. Eviction. He blinked, certain that the words would rearrange themselves into something less alarming. They didn’t. His gaze darted around the apartment, lingering on the chipped paint, the threadbare carpet, the stacks of unopened mail.

He scoffed. This whole thing reeked of something fishy. He wasn't the type to be a pushover, he'd make sure his voice was heard. How could they evict him? He'd complied. He'd done everything asked of him.

He slammed the paper down on the kitchen counter, the action fueled by rising irritation. He'd get to the bottom of this. He’d find out who was behind this and why. He wasn't going anywhere.
