He stared at the scene unfolding before him, arms crossed tightly. Mrs. Gable's face was a mask of dismay as she surveyed the damage. A large branch had demolished the fence between their properties, and her prized rose bushes were now covered in debris. It looked awful, he had to admit.

He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "Well, that's a shame," he offered, his voice flat. He noted how theatrically she clutched her chest.

He remembered her constant complaints about the tree. Too shady, she'd said. It dropped too many leaves. He wondered if this was the opportunity she had been waiting for.
