He’d always considered himself an only child. That was, until a lawyer's phone call shattered his reality. "There's a person claiming to be your half-sister," the lawyer had said, his voice smooth and practiced. Mark had listened, a cold sensation creeping up his spine.

Mark drummed his fingers on the worn tabletop of his favorite diner, the same diner he’d been coming to for years. The waitress, Sarah, asked if he needed a refill, but he just shook his head. He hadn't touched his coffee.

He picked at a loose thread on his jeans. This whole situation felt... manufactured. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was being played. He had a family. He didn’t need another one.
