Mr. Davies walked into his classroom after school and noticed a small, leather-bound journal resting on his desk. He picked it up cautiously. *A gift?* The only gifts he received were usually coffee mugs that quickly ended up broken or in the trash. He flipped it open.

The pages were blank, waiting for him to write in them. On the first page, in elegant script, was a dedication. "To Mr. Davies, with gratitude. From Ethan." Ethan, a former student who’d caused him endless headaches with his disruptive behavior.

He closed the journal, running his thumb over the smooth leather. The gesture felt reflexive, an attempt to gather more clues about the motives of the giver. He opened it again, a faint smile playing on his lips. He needed to know what was going on.
