The campus radio buzzed in the background as Jessica packed her books into her backpack. The news anchor was speaking with a somber tone. “…university officials have confirmed…” Jessica muted the radio, her hand tightening around a textbook. She could feel her pulse, quickening.

She’d heard the whispers. Financial trouble. Empty classrooms. But closure? That was a different beast altogether. She walked to her dorm room window and looked out across the campus quad. Students walked about as usual. The scene seemed normal.

She went back to packing. Did she believe it? Not yet. Not until she saw the bulldozers. Or, at least, until she saw an official confirmation. She would hold judgment until then.
