He stared out the window of the coffee shop, watching the rain cascade down the glass. The warmth of the latte was slowly permeating his body, but it wasn't enough. Across the small table, a woman was recounting a trip they'd taken to the coast. He closed his eyes for a moment, the memory of sand and waves momentarily soothing. “He remembered to get me my favorite kind of ice cream,” she said. The image of the ice cream sparked a memory. Her words were starting to lose all meaning. He felt a deep ache in his bones, a sense of heavy inertia. He struggled to lift his mug. Everything felt slow, and he desperately wanted to rest.
