The invitation felt slick and strange in her hand. "Finally," she thought, the word almost a whisper. The idea of revisiting the past, of seeing those faces again, felt oddly comforting, like a warm blanket. But even that thought felt difficult.

The events of the day had drained her. She'd been running on nervous energy, and the crash had arrived. The apartment felt too warm, the air still and heavy. She closed the blinds, hoping to reduce the heat.
