"Just a few more boxes," she muttered, her voice thick with the lethargy that had been clinging to her all day. The dim afternoon light was starting to fade, and the air in the basement felt heavy and stagnant. Emily leaned against the cold brick wall, needing a moment to just… be. She rubbed her eyes, trying to clear away the fog that was clouding her thoughts.

In one of the boxes, she unearthed a stack of photographs. They depicted her father as a young man, dressed in a uniform she didn't recognize, laughing with a group of friends. Her mother had always described him as a quiet, unassuming bookkeeper, a man of routine and stability.
