The eviction notice lay on the worn, wooden floor, a stark contrast to the faded floral pattern of the rug. John felt a strange sense of detachment, as if this wasn't really happening to him. His limbs felt sluggish, as if wading through thick liquid.

He slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to alleviate the crushing weight of weariness. He wanted to escape, to leave his body, to… nothingness. The world felt muffled, distant.
