The train ride home felt extraordinarily long. Thomas stared out the window, watching the city lights blur into streaks of yellow and orange. He felt a deep, pervasive weariness. The announcement, "I'm taking a job in Denver," from Ben, had left him feeling deflated.

He slumped against the window, the cold glass a small comfort against his cheek. His eyelids felt heavy, and his thoughts wandered, disjointed. The rhythmic clatter of the train was almost hypnotic. He closed his eyes, imagining the stillness of his apartment.

The city had faded away. He wanted to be still and quiet, left in the dark. He just wished the ride would end.
