The hospital room was sterile and silent. The beeping of the machines was the only sound. John stared out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. A feeling of profound exhaustion had settled over him, making his thoughts slow and sluggish. His body felt heavy, his muscles aching. He wanted nothing more than to simply lie down.

A nurse entered, placing a letter on his bedside table. It was from his estranged daughter. His heart skipped a beat as he saw the familiar handwriting. He picked it up, his hands trembling slightly. His eyes blurred, and he struggled to focus. It felt like the air had become dense, making it difficult to breathe. He wanted to close his eyes.
