Clara yawned, a wide, involuntary stretch that left her jaw aching. The late-night movie with John had been pleasant enough, but now she felt the distinct pull of a heavy lid on her eyes. The house was quiet, the only sound the soft whir of the refrigerator. She stumbled towards the kitchen, intending to make some tea. Her gaze fell on the small, locked box in the pantry. Curious, she found the key under a flower pot, its metal cold against her fingertips. Inside, nestled amongst old photos, was a bankbook. The balance was a shock.
